History

The Friends of Swaines Green was founded in 1995 to help preserve Swaines Green as a bit of wild countryside on the edge of Epping, Essex. Initially, we worked as a volunteer group with Epping Forest Countrycare to implement the first Management Plan and to halt the decline of the grassland meadow at Lovelocks.

We also led a campaign to secure the future of the site, which culminated in 2005 with the purchase of Lower and Middle Lincoln's and Forties Fields by the Corporation of the City of London (the Conservators of Epping Forest) and of Lovelock's Meadow by Epping Town Council, with the help of monies raised by the Friends and supplemented by a grant from English Heritage.

Our main aims now are as follows:

  • Supporting the conservation of the site through ongoing habitat management;
  • Promoting use of Swaines Green by the public for leisure, for education and for scientific study.
