The Natural History of Swaines Green

Swaines Green consists of three fields of meadowland and woodland, situated on the outskirts of Epping. The site, which has never been intensively farmed, is rich in flora and fauna.

WILDLIFE

A wide variety of species can be found on the site. These include:-

BUTTERFLIES & MOTHS

   Purple Hairstreak Butterfly

Small Copper, Purple Hairstreak, Coloured Yellow, Grizzled Skipper, Essex Skipper and Small Heath. Moths include the Emperor Moth which has not been recorded in Epping Forest for the past 25 years.

BIRDS

These include the Hobby, Redstart, Buzzard, Lesser Whitethroat, Long Tailed Tits, Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker, Bullfinch, Jay, Little and Tawny Owl.

FLORA

Dog's mercury, Cuckoo Flower, Corky Fruity Dropwort (which has only around 100 sites in the country)
